Korean war veteran killed in house fire in Arnaudville

An 81-year-old Korean War Veteran was killed in a house fire in Arnaudville.

Neighbors called police shortly after 8 am early Tuesday morning to report smoke and explosions coming from the home on Division road which prompted them to call the police. Robert Kaltenbach, a retired contractor was known as the neighborhood handyman. He was wheelchair-bound and lived alone on Division Road. Investigators say the explosions were likely caused by Kaltenbach’s oxygen tanks and did not cause the fire.

Castille says the fire started inside and was likely electrical, but they’re still looking into the exact cause. He says firefighters from Arnaudville, Henderson, Cecelia, St. Martin, and Breaux Bridge responded to the fire. Gretchen Kaltenbach says her father was known for his jovial and giving spirit.

The fire department says they are still investigating exactly what caused the fire.
