St. Landry Parish man accused of causing serious injury to son

On Tuesday, St. Landry Parish Juvenile Detectives arrested 22 year old Matthew Marcantel.

He is accused of causing serious injury to his 4 month old son. Marcantel is currently being held on a $40,000 thousand dollar bond, pending trial. The tragic event began to unfold on March 14th, when the 4 month old was transported to Woman’s and Children’s Hospital in Lafayette for intensive care. The specialist neurosurgeon who examined the child determined that he displayed symptoms of “shaken baby syndrome”. The infant was bleeding on his brain and had suffered trauma to both of his eyes. The Dr. stated that “bleeding in the brain coincided with bleeding in the eyes”. He further stated that the results of his exam indicated specific symptoms that were “consistent with shaken baby syndrome or abusive head trauma”.
