A recent incident involving the theft of crawfish in St. Landry Parish has prompted the sheriff’s office to add extra patrols around all of the crawfish ponds in the area.
The crawfish theft happened just two weeks ago in Eunice, Lieutenant Clay Higgins, Public Information Officer for the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, says they are actively investigating the case.
The Sheriff’s Department has deputies on patrol for four shifts 24/7. Higgins says because the ponds are usually located in dark and remote areas patrolling is no easy task. The deputies and patrolmen have figured out the best and most effective way to protect the crop.
Stealing crawfish from a crawfish farm is a felony offense in Louisiana. If caught, the offender could face up to 10 years in prison.
