USDA complaint against Louisiana university primate lab

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – The federal government says keepers at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s primate lab broke a monkey’s arm while moving the female and her baby – and the injury went untreated until after an X-ray five days later.

That is among several allegations in a U.S. Department of Agriculture complaint against the university’s New Iberia Research Center. The complaint was posted Thursday on the website for the department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

There are allegations from 2012 through 2014.

Spokesman Aaron Martin says the university is reviewing the complaint and will respond to the USDA.

Animal rights activist Michael Budkie notes that the lab was fined $2,000 in 2007, $18,000 in 2010 and nearly $38,600 in 2013. He’s hoping for a larger fine this time.
