BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – After a year of high-profile feuding over Common Core, legislators have announced a compromise on the education standards and have started advancing it in the Louisiana House.

The deal was announced Wednesday in the House Education Committee, which approved the first piece of the compromise without objection.

The proposal calls for a wholesale review of English and math standards used in public schools.

Development and review of the standards would remain with the state education board. But the House and Senate education committees and the governor would have the ability to reject the standards. The the process would involve public hearings.

While lawmakers praised the deal, others on both sides of the issue expressed some skepticism. Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Common Core opponent, also has concerns with the review.
