An Opelousas man serving a federal sentence in a Lake Charles halfway house for failing to register as a sex offender has been sentenced again for leaving the halfway house in March without permission.

U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said in a news release that District Judge Patricia Minaldi sentenced 45-year-old Christopher Courvelle to an additional 15 months in federal custody. Courvelle pleaded guilty Tuesday, and was then sentenced by Minaldi.

Finley says Courvelle left the halfway house on March 3, and agents located the Courvelle March 4 at a bus depot.

Courvelle was convicted and placed in the halfway house in June 2012 for not updating his sex offender filing. His original conviction was for rape, which requires the felon to register as a sex offender for life.
