Bill allowing abuse victims to break lease passes committee

Victims of domestic violence would be able to break a lease to escape abusers under a bill moving closer to final legislative passage.

The proposal by Sen. Sharon Weston Broome, a Baton Rouge Democrat, would also allow landlords to immediately evict those who are deemed abusers by the courts or a state welfare agency.

The House civil law committee voted 8-5 Monday in favor of the bill, which previously passed the Senate. It now goes to the full House for consideration.

Advocates say the bill is needed because there aren’t enough protections for women who endure abuse. But some Republicans on the committee said the proposal would take away landlord authority and could lead to unintended legal consequences.
