Four Outstanding Leaders to be honored as 2015 Fathers of the Year

Four exemplary Acadiana area dads and community leaders were announced as the 2015 Fathers of the Year. The men will be honored June 19 at a Reception for the Father of the Year Awards at the U L Lafayette Student Union.  The honorees are:

Mr. Allen Lee III

Allen Lee III currently serves as Assistant Principal in charge of discipline at North Crowley Elementary School. Overall, he has been in the field of education for 23 years.  He is also the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 955, sponsored through Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He has led the Pack and Troop 955 for 12 years. He has had the distinction of leading six scouts to attain the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Lee and his wife Angela have been married for 21 years and have three children, Allen, IV.


Sheriff Mike Newstrom

Mike Neustrom has served as Sheriff for Lafayette Parish since the year 2000. He has launched various programs to assist juveniles in the criminal justice system, including programs that address truancy and class disruption by bringing therapy sessions into the home. He also instituted The Leadership and Resiliency Program, a school and community-based program for middle and high school students that enhance decision making and coping skills among youth and works toward reducing their involvement in substance use and violence. Sheriff Neustrom is a co-founder of St. Joseph Diner and has been married to Ceci Neustrom for 45 years. They have six children and six grand-children.


Dr. Richard Travers

Prior to his retirement, Dr. Richard Travers served in various positions in the Louisiana Community and Technical College System for 37 years. For over two decades he has been a role model and father figure for countless young people in the city of Lafayette and surrounding areas. Dr. Travers has been the long-time advisor of the Zeta Xi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and profoundly impacted Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana. He has been a father figure to many, spending countless hours feeding, teaching, and listening to those who admire and respect him. His many awards include the Alpha Phi Alpha Award for Outstanding Area Director (2015) ; Outstanding Advisor (2013) and College Brother Advocate Award.(2012).


Mr. Shawn Wilson

Shawn Wilson has served as Chief of Staff at the Louisiana Department of Transportation since 2004. Even with a very busy school and work schedule, he still finds time to serve as an active member at Progressive Baptist Church. He has mentored many of his Fraternity brothers in Alpha Phi Alpha and has followed one of his biggest passions as a member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Acadiana. Shawn has held local and national offices with this organization and has been a Big Brother for over 10 years. He maintains regular contact with his little brother who he was matched with to this day.  Shawn finds time to be active with his son’s Boy Scout Troop #271 and is very involved with his daughter’s activities as well. He and his wife, Rocki Williams Wilson, have been married for 20 years and are the parents of Shawn Denise, and Joshua.


The 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Evangeline Area Council Boy Scouts of America have partnered together to sponsor this event and recognize these outstanding fathers and father figures. Proceeds from this event shall fund 100 at-risk youth for membership in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Varsity Scouts and Exploring.
