Military officials in Indonesia say at least 49 bodies have been recovered after an air force transport train crashed into a residential neighborhood today.
TV footage shows the mangled wreckage of the C-130 plane, a crumpled burning car and a shattered building that local media said contained a spa and homes.
The police chief in North Sumatra says the plane’s manifest shows it was carrying 50 people, but the actual number may be higher. Many passengers were families of military personnel.
Air force officials say the plane appeared to develop engine trouble shortly after takeoff.
