Deputies with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a toddler found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a residence in Erath.
Sheriff Mike Couvillon said information gathered by investigators at the scene indicate the young girl appeared to have exited the residence through a rear door and climbed into an above ground swimming pool before she was found.
The caretaker said they immediately began performing CPR on the child until relieved by first responders from Erath, Iberia Fire Departments and Acadian Ambulance paramedics. The young girl was flown by Acadian Ambulance Air-Med to Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Lafayette where she later succumbed to her injuries.
An investigation is ongoing and the exact cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
Couvillon said the name of the toddler is being withheld at the request of the family.
