Mayci Breaux’s family on moving forward

LAFAYETTE, La. (WJTV/MEDIA GENERAL) – Mayci Breaux’s family was supposed to be celebrating Mayci’s sister, Ali’s, sweet sixteen birthday. Instead, they were mourning the loss of 21-year-old Mayci who was killed at a theater in Lafayette, Louisiana on Thursday night, July 23.

“Until the rush is all over, and it kind of calms down, that’s when the reality hits. It’s been tough,” said Anne Oestriecher, a cousin on Mayci’s father’s side of the family.

Mayci was one of two people shot and killed by the gunman who later killed himself. Mayci’s boyfriend, Matt, was also shot.

“We believe she’s in a better place now. We’re very thankful that Matt survived and that he’s still with us,” Oestriecher said.

Mayci was studying to be a radiologist. Oestriecher said she was a good kid, with a good heart and strong faith.

While support from the community has been “outstanding,” according to Oestriecher. Things haven’t been easy.

“Anger is obviously there. I’m glad we’re not going to have to go through a trial. I’m glad that the family is not going to have to go through that and deal with all the things the family of the Aurora shooting victims have to go through with,” Oestriecher said.

“At some point, I’m going to have to find it in my heart to forgive because that’s the Christian thing to do. Not yet. Not yet.”
