According to Deputies with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office, a report of a well site fire off La 717, west of Gueydan off of Price and Laurent Roads was received Sunday afternoon at approximately 3:45 pm. The Klondike Fire Department, Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office and Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office were first on the scene. State Police Hazmat and DEQ were also notified.
According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Colonel Kirk Frith, residents were evacuated within a square mile area to include homes on Price and Laurent Road near La. Hwy 717.
“Pioneer” (the responding company for well site) was on the scene working with authorities to get the fire under control. At present, the suspected cause of the fire is lightening due to a storm that moved through before the fire erupted.
Authorities on the scene believe that the fire source may be a tank reservoir on the well site. According to fire department personnel on scene and company personnel, the fire is contained and will be allowed to burn out under supervision.
A decision to lift the evacuation will be made once the responding fire department and DEQ believe the scene is safe.
There were no reported injuries related to the fire. Updates will be provided when more information becomes available.
