Fort Polk soldier killed by drunk driver in Calcasieu Parish

A U.S. Army soldier is now dead after being hit by a drunk driver in Calcasieu Parish.

It happened around 3:55 a.m. this morning on LA 385, south of Lake Charles.

State Police Sgt. James Anderson says Devin Lee Olmos, 22, of San Antonio, was trying to cross the highway when he was hit by a 1999 Mazada pickup truck.

He was pronounced dead a Lake Charles hospital. Olmos was station at Fort Polk in Leesville, LA

The driver, Marcus Devin Pettifield, 37, of Lake Arthur, was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide and driving under suspension.

Sgt. Anderson says, “A breath test indicated Pettifield was over the legal limit for alcohol.”

Pettifield was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. The crash remains under investigation.

Troop D, which serves Calcasieu and Jefferson Davis parishes, has investigated 18 fatal crashes that have resulted in 19 fatalities this year.

State Police encourages motorists to report drunk drivers by dialing *LSP (*577) or calling 911.
