A New Iberia man is now facing multiple charges after intentionally hitting a man with his car, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“A vehicle actually went across the center lane. Went onto the side walk and hit a pedestrian. That vehicle actually fled the scene.” says Major Ryan Turner with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Captain Turner says deputies have arrested Jeremy Smith, 29, of New Iberia, on charges of Attempted Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.
It happened around 8:45 a.m. on Myrtis Street, when Smith allegedly hit the victim with his Buick LaSabre while the victim was walking on the sidewalk. Smith then drove away, according to Captain Turner.
“About an hour later deputies were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle. He has since been taken into custody and is being questioned.” says Turner.
The victim was airlifted to a Lafayette hospital and is still being treated for injuries. Captain Turner says doctors expect the victim to recover.
Investigators believe Smith intentionally hit the victim, although no motive is known at this time.
Smith is currently being booked into the Iberia Parish Jail.
