On Tuesday evening, NAACP Lafayette members and the Community Counsel of Black Elders will gather at the Imani Temple #49, 201 E. Willow Street, to talk about their concerns with police in Lafayette.
At the center of it all will be the Lafayette Police Department officer accused of shooting a man in the back, over the weekend, near a home on Soulier Street.
The shooting happened as police were attempting to serve a warrant on 37 year old Robert Stewart.
Police say when they approached the home one of six people inside attempted to escape…and a foot chase began. Corporal Paul Mouton said the individual who ran has been identified as 22 year old Trevin Lewis. Mouton said Lewis removed a handgun from his person during the attempted escape and was shot by a Lafayette police officer. He was then apprehended, handcuffed and transported to an area hospital where he is in stable condition.
Stuart, meanwhile, was immediately taken into custody on a city court warrant for an OWI. Police say Stewart was also found to be in possession of a stolen handgun.
The press conference will take place at 5 pm.
