Police search for carjacking suspect near Ville Platte after high-speed pursuit

Ville Platte Police are looking for 31-year-old Willie Melvin, who allegedly stole a vehicle and took authorities on a high-speed pursuit before crashing into a ditch.

He than ran into a nearby field. Investigators describe him as a “black male with light colored skin.” Melvin was last seen wearing blue jean shorts and a black t-shirt.

The following is a release from the Ville Platte Police Department:

At approximately 2:12 p.m. today the Ville Platte Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle on Project Street. Officers responded to the area and attempted to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle fled from Officers heading out of the city limits and turned on the Tate Cove Road headed north. After a short pursuit the suspect crashed the vehicle into a ditch near Industrial Road.

The suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby field. Ville Platte Police Officers, Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, Ville Platte City Marshal Deputies and Louisiana State Troopers began searching the Industrial Park area.

Eunice Police Department arrived with K-9 units and are still currently searching for the suspect.

Authorities are searching for Willie Melvin who is a 31 year old black male with light colored skin. He was last seen wearing blue jean shorts and a black t-shirt.

If you have any information on this suspects whereabouts you are asked to call the Ville Platte Police Department at 363-1313. Chief Lartigue stated that the department will issue further information as it becomes available.
