A Jennings mother and her boyfriend now face felony child cruelty charges after her one-year-old daughter suffered third degree burns to her lower body, according to the Jennings Police Department.
Officers received a call from a local hospital around 10:15 Sunday night about a severely burned toddler. Initially the mother, Shelby Jones, claimed the child’s older sibling burned her daughter.
But investigators learned she was actually in Lake Charles at the time of the incident. Jones admitted her boyfriend, Japheal Griffin, was home with the children Sunday night.
Griffin told investigators he placed the toddler in a tub of hot water after becoming upset when the child soiled herself, according to Deputy Police Chief Danny Semmes.
The young girl was transported to the Burn Unit at Baton Rouge General Medical Center, where she remains at this time.
Both Jones and Griffin were arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail.
Japheal Griffin has been charged with Second Degree Cruelty to Juveniles and Shelby Jones has been charged as an accessory. Bond has been set at $40,000 for both.
