Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette will hold a special mass on Wednesday evening to celebrate the canonization of the blessed Junipero Serra. Which church members says is also a historic moment.
Deacon Tim Maragos of Our Lady of Fatima says, “Tomorrow for the first time a Saint will be canonized in the United States, that’s never happened before.””
Deacon Maragos says Serra will also be the first Hispanic saint. Serra, an 18th century missionary founded nine of California’s 21 missions. Maragos says the church will gather to commemorate Serra’s canonization with the head of Lafayette’s Diocese Bishop Michael Jarrell and Fatima Pastor, Father Michael Russo.
Maragos says, “It’s a special mass for the whole diocese to celebrate the historic event and to ask the intercession as we do at with all of our saints.”
The mass starts at 5:30 p.m. The Serra Club of Lafayette and a number of Acadiana area priests will also join the service. Maragos says the Diocese chose to have the mass at Our Lady of Fatima because it’s the biggest church in Lafayette.
Our Lady of Fatima member Brandy Soileau says she expects a larger than normal crowd at tomorrow night’s mass and will plan accordingly. “I’ll be there 30 minutes early, it’s great that the community is coming together.”
Maragos says there will also be a Holy Hour for vocations following Wednesday night’s mass.
As always, tomorrow night’s mass will be open to the public.
