Louisiana has applied for a waiver in order to opt out of a TSA change.

On January 1st you would need a passport in order to fly in or out of any airport in the country. There is no word yet on when a decision about that could be made.
The TSA change is due to the 2005 “Real ID Act”.

Passports take between four and 12 weeks to get in the mail once you apply, so it’s recommended that you apply by October 1st if you plan to travel January 1st.
Children under 18 do not need a passport when traveling with a companion.
