NEW ORLEANS — It appears that Saints quarterback Drew Brees has a good chance to play Sunday in Carolina, according to head coach Sean Payton, though it is anything but certain at this point.
While Brees still hasn’t thrown yet this week, Payton said Thursday morning he felt optimistic that his 36-year-old quarterback will lead the Saints this weekend against their division rival, added it will be “later in the week before we know for sure.”
Payton based his optimism off the optimism Brees had a day earlier. Brees suffered a bruised rotator cuff Sunday in a loss to the Tampa Buccaneers.
Payton said he hopes Brees will throw at some point this week instead of waiting until Sunday.
While Week 3 hardly determines a team’s yearlong success, the Saints are ailing beyond Brees shoulder at 0-2, and are desperate for a win.
