Police: Lack of Seat Belt Usage factor in deadly crash

UPDATE: A two vehicle crash on Interstate 10, east of Rayne, has taken the life of a 21 year old Carencro woman.

State Police say Britaney Waldrep was driving a 2008 Nissan Maxima eastbound in the right lane on Interstate 10, and had overtaken a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo, operated 27 year old Miranda Olivier of Maurice. Police say she as she began to change back into the right lane her vehicle struck the front left side of the Chevrolet Aveo. After impact, both vehicles ran off of the right side of the roadway and Waldrep’s vehicle began to overturn.

Police say she was unrestrained at the time of the crash, was ejected from her vehicle and pronounced dead on scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office.

The two unidentified passengers in her vehicle were properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say the driver of the second vehicle was properly restrained and suffered minor injuries. Impairment is not considered to be a factor; however, toxicology samples were taken from Waldrep and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Olivier submitted to a chemical test and was not impaired.

The crash happened around 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening. There were major traffic delays for several hours.

ORIGINAL: State Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash on I-10 eastbound between Crowley and Rayne.

Police say it happened around 7:00 p.m. near mile marker 85 and involved two vehicles. The cause of the crash is under investigation and police have not released the name of the victim.

Traffic is moving slowly in both directions.
