Jean-Paul Coussan wins House District 45 race

Political newcomer Jean-Paul Coussan, a Republican from Lafayette, was elected Saturday to represent residents in Louisiana House District 45.

Coussan is a small businessman and a partner in Andrus Boudreaux Complete Title, a Lafayette real estate law firm. He co-founded Cougar Construction LLC, a real estate investment company, and was an attorney with Ottinger Hebert LLC, primarily defending oil and gas companies in legacy lawsuits and other business issues.

He served on the Cajundome Commission, was selected as one of the Top 20 Under 40 and was on the board of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce board for 2011-2013.

Coussan will replace state Rep. Joel Robideaux, R-Lafayette, who could not seek re-election because of term limits. Instead, he ran for Lafayette City-Parish president and won that race Oct. 24.

How they voted

Comeaux: 49 percent, 5,505

Coussan: 51 percent, 5,765
