A two vehicle crash on LA Hwy 167 north of LA Hwy 103 in St. Landry Parish has claimed the lives of a Ville Platte couple.
State police say 87 year old Frederick Phillips and 84 year old Bonnie Phillips died shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday night.
An initial investigation has revealed that the crash occurred as Frederick Phillips was driving north on LA Hwy 167 and began to pass a northbound vehicle. At the same time, police say 26 year old Elliot Leblanc of Breaux Bridge was driving south on LA Hwy 167 and was unable to avoid the crash and the vehicles struck head-on.
Frederick Phillips was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. Bonnie Phillips, the passenger, was wearing a seat belt, but also suffered fatal injuries.
The St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced both Frederick and Bonnie Phillips dead.
Police say Leblanc was wearing a seat belt and suffered moderate injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, however, an investigation is on going.
