A woman has been arrested and charged for the death of a 9-year-old girl, according to the Breaux Bridge Police Department.
Assistant Chief Terry Latiolais said Leah Kilchrist, 35, of Breaux Bridge, was allegedly driving while intoxicated when her car crossed into the opposite lane and crashed into another car.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night in the 700 block of East Bridge Street.
Three children and one adult were in the other vehicle. One of the children, a 9-year-old girl died. The adult was treated for minor injuries.
The other two children were not injured. Kilchrist, who was driving alone, tested positive for alcohol after the crash and was well over the legal limit, according to Latiolais.
Breaux Bridge Police charged Kilchrist with vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injuring, driving left of center, and no driver’s license on person after consulting with the St. Martin Parish district attorney.
