INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An injectable sponge that a manufacturer claims can stop bleeding in seconds has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The product is XStat 30, a syringe-like tool that injects tiny sponges into a wound to treat hemorrhaging.

The XStat 30 is used to plug bleeding from bullet and shrapnel injuries in the groin, armpits, and other areas a tourniquet is difficult to treat. The sponges can be used for up to four hours, allowing time for an injured person to receive medical care.

The FDA gave the approval to deploy the device to hospitals on Thursday. It had previously been used only on the battlefield.

The device was created by RevMedx, a small startup in Portland, Oregon. The company primarily designs products for military personnel and emergency first responders.
