Five dead in Amtrak train crash in New Iberia

UPDATE: Louisiana State Police Troop I was contacted and informed that a fifth passenger involved in a train crash in Iberia Parish, only days before Christimas, has died.

Police say 49 year old Stephen Leblanc of New Iberia passed away Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge.  Just one day earlier, Christmas Day, 12 year old Chase Day of New Iberia also succumb to his injuries.

ORIGINAL: A 70-year old woman and two minors are dead and three are still hospitalized after an Amtrak train struck their vehicle Tuesday evening in Iberia Parish.

Phyllis Leblanc, 70, of New Iberia and her five passengers were stopped on the tracks at the intersection of Highway 182 and Highway 88 when the train crashed into them, according to Louisiana State Police Troop-I.

Leblanc and two minors were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining passengers, Steve Leblanc, 49, and two other minors were transported to a local hospital with critical to moderate injuries.

Witnesses state that the crossing bars were working at the time of the crash.

Master Trooper Brooks David said in a press release that impairment is not suspected.

The investigation remains ongoing.
