JENNINGS, La. – A man who was wanted for murder in Texas was found dead in the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail over the weekend, according to the sheriff’s office.
Commander Christopher Ivey said investigators discovered the body of Richard Craig, of Humble, Texas, hanging in his cell on Saturday night.
Deputy jailers attempted to revive the man and called EMS. The coroner pronounced Craig dead at the scene.
Jefferson Davis Parish deputies arrested on December 30, 2015, near Elton, La. on a fugitive warrant for murder.
Craig was wanted by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly shooting a man earlier that morning, according to Ivey.
Harris County Sheriff’s deputies requested extradition for Craig after interviewing him in Jennings late Wednesday night.
Ivey said Craig was booked into Jefferson Davis Parish Jail on Wednesday night and placed in an isolation cell on suicide watch.
Craig was scheduled for an extradition hearing Monday morning and to be transported back to Houston, Texas.
