Acadiana Regional leaders break ground for new terminal

The first commercial passenger flights out of the Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia could be lifting off by fall.

Iberia Parish officials broke ground Thursday on a new 1,200-square-foot passenger terminal, a key in a plan to offer round-trip flights to Houston for oil and gas business trips.

Airport Director F. Jason Devillier says they hope to serve about 300 oil and gas companies along the U.S. 90 corridor between New Iberia and Lafayette looking for a cheaper alternative to next-day tickets at the larger Lafayette Regional Airport.

He says the goal is to run 10 to 12 flights per week on 50-passenger jets or 30-passenger prop planes.

The new $800,000 terminal is expected to be finished by November.
