Changes could be coming to a deadly railroad crossing in Iberia Parish where five people were killed back in December.
The DOTD is now reviewing the intersections at highways 88 and 182.
Since 2012, a train has collided with a vehicle at least once each year at the highway 88 railroad crossing.
Deidra Druillhet with the DOTD says, state transportation engineers are studying the intersection for any changes that may have taken place since the last study in 2011.
“Basically what we’re going to be doing is collecting various aspects of information, and that’s going to include things such as traffic volumes, looking at the percentage of trucks that travel along that particular route.”
In the past, Iberia parish residents have inquired about a traffic light at the intersection. Druillhet says the installation of traffic signals will depend on the results of the study.
“The last time we did a study out there, the area did not meet the warrants for a traffic signal to be installed.”
Engineers will review four different railroad crossings in that area. While the study is underway, DOTD encourages the public to use extreme caution at railroad crossings.
Druillhet says the study began about two weeks ago and expect to have a finalized review in about two months.
