Lafayette Fire Department responded to Paul Breaux Middle School shortly after 1 p.m. for a call reporting a fire in a restroom.
When fire crews arrived, heavy smoke was coming from a male bathroom in the main building.
A School resource officer with Lafayette Police Department utilized a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire but the fire caused substantial smoke and fire damage in the bathroom.
Lafayette Firefighters set up exhaust fans to assist in removing the smoke from the hallways.
All students were quickly removed from the area by the school’s administration and staff and no injuries were reported.
Fire investigators determined that a small fire was set in the bathroom.
The 13 year old male student responsible was arrested and charged for intentionally setting the fire.
