LSP identify woman killed in train crash in Jeff Davis Parish

JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH, La. (KLFY) – One person is dead and another injured after a car traveled into the path of train this morning, according to the Louisiana State Police.

The incident happened around 9:12 a.m on LA 1151 (Oilfield Road) about two and a half miles west of Welsh, La.

Sgt. James Anderson said the Donna Daigle, 69, of Iowa, La., drove partially onto the railroad crossing and stopped.

Her car was then hit by, “westbound freight train causing the vehicle to rotate off of the track into a utility pole,” according to Anderson.

Daigle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner’s Office.

A passenger received moderate injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Lafayette General Medical Center.

Both Daigle and the passenger were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Anderson explained that Oilfield Road is “a lightly traveled gravel road in a farming area.  The railroad crossing was properly marked by railroad crossbucks and stop signs.”

Authorities obtained a routine toxicology sample from Donna Daigle and will be submitted for analysis.

State Police are still investigating the crash.
