Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation: Child porn on the rise

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Sexual exploitation of children on the internet is popping up more frequently.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children had 4.4 million tips for child sex-related crimes in 2015.

Since 2002, the Center’s cyber tip line has reviewed more than 158 million pictures and videos and found more than ten thousand child victims.

Ohio BCI Cyber Crimes Unit Agent Salavas Kidd said that it’s still difficult to find those criminals.

Pictures and videos are shared every second of the day on the internet, and Kidd said the Ohio BCI discovers more child pornography being shared every year. But with more of our lives being stored on our computers, and more images shared every year, finding the perpetrators is not necessarily becoming easier.

“We always have challenges,” Kidd said. “Obviously, as technology continues to advance and evolve, we as agents and law enforcement must stay current.”

Kidd could not say how much, but he said they have various tools to find those who may possess child pornography.

We have access to the internet every second of the day, with our cell phones. With more images being sent on phones, investigators are changing their tactics.

Kidd says the Ohio BCI in Columbus has a great working relationship with investigators in Mahoning and Trumbull County.

“We’ve been very proactive in investigating crimes against children in those areas,” Kidd said.
