NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – The girlfriend of the man who was gunned down early this morning told News 10 she talked to him minutes before he died.

Sharenton Vital explained her boyfriend Jermaine Decuir was walking up to the front door of their house when he was shot multiple times.

“He texted me about 3 o’clock this morning telling me that he was coming on his way from Walmart, asking me if I needed anything,” Vital told KLFY’s Kellie Brown.

Their next door neighbor, Jasmine Lofton said she woke up after hearing the gunshots, “Around maybe 3:40 I woke up out of my sleep and I heard maybe seven or eight gunshots.”

Lofton described the scene outside as something out of a movie:

“Police officers everywhere, they roped off from here to over there and they will drop everything and they told us (to) ‘get back in the house,'” Lofton said.

Decuir lived at the home on Anne Street with his girlfriend and their children.

His girlfriend didn’t feel comfortable getting on camera but she did allow us to film this picture of her, Decuir and their kids.

Vital’s last memory of Decuir is hearing him scream her name before the mayhem.

“He pulled up, he got out of the car and all I heard was him scream my name and when I heard him scream my name I immediately heard gunshots after that. 7, 8, 9, 10 of them back to back,” Vital said.

Authorities told her no bullet casings were found in her yard so the gunman may have shot Decuir from the street.

She believes whoever did this had to be on foot because she doesn’t remember hearing the sound of a car.

Vital plans to move as soon as she can:

“The best thing for me to do is just to go somewhere else and start over, I don’t see myself being down here. I don’t want to remember this and I don’t want to live here anymore.”

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the case and has not identified a suspect at this time. Anyone with any information a
