A two vehicle crash on LA 42 (Highland Rd.) east of LA 3246 (Siegen Ln.) in East Baton Rouge Parish has claimed the life of 9 year old Fernando Mendenzez of Baton Rouge.
Police say the victim was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by 46 year old Elmer Mendenzez of Baton Rouge.
An investigation has revealed that Mendenzez was traveling east on LA 42 in a pickup truck at the same time that 46 year old Ron Adams of Baton Rouge was traveling west on LA 42 in an SUV.
For unknown reasons, police say Menendez lost control of his vehicle when it began to rotate counterclockwise, crossed the center line and veered into the path of the oncoming SUV.
9 year old Fernando was unrestrained and ejected from the front seat of the vehicle; police say he sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office.
Elmer Menendez was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Adams was properly restrained and received moderate injuries.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis.
Police say after Menendez is released from jail, he will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail for Negligent Injuring, Careless Operation, No Seat Belt, and No Child Restraint.
