LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Edgar G. “Sonny” Mouton, Jr., a longtime Louisiana political leader from Lafayette died this morning after a lengthy battle with illness, according to family members. He was 86 years old.
Delhomme Funeral Home has confirmed to KLFY that they are currently working with Mouton’s family to finalize his funeral arrangements.
Mouton was one of Acadian’s most well-known and beloved political figures, spending much of his civic career as a leader in state government and as a longtime state senator.
Mouton was a Democratic member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1964 to 1966 and the Louisiana State Senate from 1966 to 1980.
He was instrumental in passing the 1974 Louisiana constitution, and was a candidate for governor in 1979.
The political leader received two degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans; his bachelor’s degree in 1951 and his law degree in 1953.
