Louisiana Congressman Ralph Abraham of Monroe says he wants the state to quickly become a trading partner with Cuba once the U.S. finishes normalizing relations with the island nation.
Both Abraham and Rick Crawford of Arkansas are traveling to Cuba on April 6 to talk to Cuban officials about the details of shipping and distribution.
Meryl Kennedy Farr of Louisiana is among those who will join the Congressman on the trip.
Farr is the Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Kennedy Rice.
Her family is one of the largest rice growers in the state.
In the past Cuba was the largest importer of Louisiana rice. Promoters of Louisiana rice say the proximity of Cuba and the high demand for quality rice makes trade between the two locations ideal.
