New Iberia, La. (KLFY) – It’s a group many never want to be a part of, but members say they are happy to have this support system to help them through hard times.
Monday, the support group VOICE held it’s 13th Annual VOICE Rally. Voices of innocent citizens empowered is a support group for families of victims of violent crime.
Effie James lost her son in 2004,she has been a member ever since. James said this group has shown her tremendous love and support.
“The group will laugh with you, cry with you, and give you the courage to continue day by day.”
This rally kicks off national crime victim’s right’s week. This year’s theme is serving victims, building trust and restoring hope. The event featured several guest speakers including Dondie Breaux.
Breaux is the mother of Mayci Breaux, one of the victims of the Grand Theatre shooting last summer. Breaux said it’s encouraging to see others who truly understand.
“There are others that are going through the same thing that we are going through. We are not alone.”
Members closed the rally by saying their loved one’s name followed by a butterfly release in their memory.
Then Breaux noticed one of the butterflies landed on her and did not leave her side, creating a moment she’ll cherish forever.
“That’s the signs that I love to see because it is a sign from him, for her, and I cherish all of it,” said Breaux.
