Ecuador earthquake: Death toll jumps to 238; more than 1,500 wounded

Ecuador’s vice president says last night’s magnitude-7.8 earthquake has left 235 people dead and another 1,557 injured.  Jorge Glas also tells a news conference despite rumors to the contrary, there’s no risk of a tsunami.

The earthquake flattened much of the provincial capital of Portoviejo, leaving rescuers scrambling through the ruins, digging with their hands to find survivors.

Among the collapsed structures are a hotel, the local social security headquarters and a telecommunications building.
