MARTINVILLE, La. (KLFY)—A major fire in St. Martinville burned through two homes, shutting down a portion of Main Street for several hours.
Paid and volunteer firefighters from multiple agencies battled a blaze that burned through two St. Martinville homes.
Neighbors tell News 10 whatever sparked the fire made a loud boom, adding the blast was so forceful it pushed the shed several feet away for its original location.
The Florsheim family spent Thursday afternoon helplessly standing by as they watched the fire rip through their home of seventeen years.
“It’s devastating, just everything from the children’s christening gowns to their baby clothes that I had hoped to pass on to them when they had children. We think we lost one if not two pets.”
No one was home during the fire other than the family cat and dog who are still unaccounted for.
Despite everything, Florsheim says the safety of her husband and three children is the best mother’s day present she could ever receive.
“It’s a blessing this year because all of my children are here. This didn’t happen in the middle of the night while we were sleeping. I didn’t lose a child and that’s the most important thing.”
The family lost the house and most of their belongings including the oldest daughter’s graduation gown, but firefighters managed to save several items, including precious family portraits and pictures.
“Some of my big portraits and oil paintings of the children in their christening gowns. I just fell to the ground when they brought those out because it was just so emotional for me. You have so many memories in a house you’ve lived in for seventeen years. They (firefighters) did without us even asking they just started taking all my pictures off the wall and bringing them out and I can’t thank them enough for that.”
After the fire was contained, several people stayed to help the family sort through all of their belongings.
The exact cause of the blaze is still unknown, but the fire appears to have originated in a shed behind the Florsheims house.
