BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – Gov. John Bel Edwards weighed in on a bill approved by a House committee that would expand access to medical marijuana.

SB 271, sponsored by Sen. Fred Mills, R-Parks, is headed to the House aftermaking it through the House Health and Welfare Committee on Tuesdaywith a vote of 8-6.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, the governor said he supports the measure which increases the number of diseases where marijuana can legally be used for treatment in Louisiana.

The bill also allows doctors to recommend rather than prescribe the drug.

The governor said he knows too many people, especially children, who could benefit from medicinal pot.

“I quite frankly think that the state ought not to be between the doctor and the parents when it comes to what might be best for those children, and I don’t think we ought to tell those parents, ‘Well if you want access to what your doctor thinks is the best course of action, you need to move,'” Edwards said.

Some in law enforcement have expressed concern that the bill could lead to eventual legalization of recreational pot. Edwards said there is no way that will happen while he is in office.

The bill is awaiting debate on the House floor.
