NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An Orleans Parish judge has sentenced a former New Orleans police recruit to 25 years in prison in the shooting death of a man attempting to steal his bike.
Bradley Parvez was convicted in February of manslaughter in the 2014 death of Timothy Rainwater, who was shot while attempted to steal Parvez’s bicycle.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports that Parvez’s lawyer apologized to Rainwater’s family and his own during Thursday’s sentencing, but told the judge Parvez acted in response to Rainwater.
Prosecutors charged Parvez with second-degree murder, but a jury convicted him of manslaughter.
Parvez testified he feared for his life when Rainwater reached for a gun.
A ballistics expert said Parvez fired from inside his house through a glass door, and then pursued. Rainwater was found in an adjacent alley, shot between the shoulders and in the back of the head.
