BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – An LSU fraternity will not be kicked off campus, but is on probation after an investigation into alleged hazing.

LSU officials said the university’s chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity has been put on probation until May 31, 2019. The decision was made by the University Hearing Panel Thursday after the fraternity declined a previous decision, wanting to defend the charges.

As part of the probation issued, Lambda Chi will not be able to recruit any new members as well as sponsor or participate in any social events until after August 1, 2017. Any current associate members will have to be initiated by October 15. The fraternity will also have to follow other restrictions that were listed in a letter sent by LSU.

The Investigators obtained documents that show the alleged hazing took place the week of March 10 during initiation. Withholding medication, sleep deprivation, and forcing members to sleep at the fraternity house were all cited several times as possible acts of hazing.

The documents also show that Lambda Chi had already received a letter of reprimand in December 2015 for unspecified reasons.

An incident report submitted by fraternity advisors to LSU as part of the investigation details some of the events in question.

In a previous report by the Investigators, a national Lambda Chi Alpha representative said he could not comment as the investigation is ongoing and did not have direct knowledge of the previous letter of reprimand.

The fraternity was first given the option of agreeing to an Administrative Outcome, meaning the group accepts the charges and whatever penalty the university decides based on the evidence at hand.

In this case, the Administrative Outcome chose the most severe penalty, which would have involved kicking Lambda Chi off campus for two years.

The fraternity declined the Administrative Outcome which lead to the hearing and outcome issued on Thursday.

If Lambda Chi is found violating any polices or codes while on probation, the fraternity will be kicked off the campus for at least three years.

Two other fraternities were booted from LSU in 2015 following accusations of hazing. The LSU chapter of Acacia Fraternity was closed in March, while Sigma Chi was suspended in November and kicked off campus in December.
