LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– On Wednesday current reserve Lafayette City Marshal and former Saint Landry Parish Captain Clay Higgins announced his bid for  U.S. Representative for Louisiana’s 3rd congressional district.

“I’m not running for office,” said Higgins at a campaign kickoff rally on Wednesday. “I’m descending into the belly of the beast the leviathan of biblical proportions that has become our federal government.”

The Cajun John Wayne has gained support with his narrative of being a working-class patriot and calls for Americans to set aside their differences and unite.

“I understand what it is to choose between paying for rent and buying your groceries. I’ve wept at the crushing feeling of an eviction notice. Your pain is mine and it’s shared by every loving American.”

Ryan Chachere a retired firefighter out of Opelousas says Captain Higgins could be the change some voters are looking for.

“The countries broken it’s obvious people aren’t happy things aren’t going well.  We’re looking for a change in direction.  I’m a common man, most of the people here tonight are common people.  I think he (Captain Higgins) represents those kinds of people and I think that’s what we need just common sense.”

Kevin Brown of Baton Rouge has known Captain Higgins for at least 30 years and considers him family.

“My mother loved this guy, we loved each others mothers.  He’s been my best man I’ve been his best man…He’s always had this passion to do God’s work.”

“Acadiana needs solid representation but the country needs a rebirth of brotherhood”

Captain Higgins says that relationship is his vision for Acadiana and the rest of the country.
