NEW ORLEANS (WWL-TV) – The NOPD obtained an arrest warrant for Chau Thai Nguyen, 33, for his role in the crash that seriously injured Officer Natasha Hunter early Sunday.

Officers obtained an arrest warrant for first-degree vehicular negligent injuring and reckless operation of a vehicle for Nguyen.

Around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nguyen missed warning lights and roadway flares on Interstate 10 near the Esplanade Avenue exit and slammed the black Acura he was driving into the rear of Officer Hunter’s marked patrol vehicle at a high rate of speed, according to police.

Officer Hunter, who was in the area responding to a multi-vehicle traffic crash, sustained significant head trauma in the incident and was taken to a local hospital where she remains in grave condition.

EMS took Nguyen to the hospital for his injuries. “Officers immediately relocated to the hospital to conduct a Standard Field Sobriety Test. During the questioning, officers detected a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and Nguyen later admitted to officers that he had consumed several alcoholic beverages earlier in the night. Toxicology results are pending,” said a statement from police.

Nguyen remains at the hospital. Once he is discharged, Nguyen will be booked accordingly, police said.
