New Orleans police officer dies from injuries suffered in car crash

NEW ORLEANS (WWLTV)  – Officer Natasha Hunter has died from injuries suffered in this weekend’s crash, the New Orleans Police Department said Tuesday.

Hunter suffered traumatic brain injuries after being inside of a police vehicle when it was struck by a car, believed to have been driven by a drunk driver.

Hunter was working on a car accident on Interstate 10 near the Esplanade Avenue exit early Sunday morning.

NOPD Chief Michael Harrison said that flares had been placed around the accident and that officer Hunter was inside her vehicle when it was struck. She was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries.

Her family has been by her side during the vigil.

Harrison said that Hunter’s situation was devastating to the entire police force. He said he did not personally know Hunter, but that she was loved by all who knew her.

Chau Thai Nguyen, 33, was initially facing on first-degree vehicular negligent injuring and reckless operation of a motor vehicle counts.

A spokesperson for the NOPD said the charge would likely be upgraded to vehicular homicide.
