LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– In an effort to keep kids out of trouble this summer the Lafayette Police Department is strictly enforcing the curfew for unaccompanied minors.

Curfew is 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays for unaccompanied minors 16 and under.

This decision follows a recent rash of car burglaries, Interm Police Chief Reginald Thomas says that most of the burglaries caught on camera appear to be kids and often occur during the early morning hours.

Corporal Tyler Mitcham has been with Lafayette PD for about seven years.  He says calls tend to spike during the summer months.

“Thursday it picks up and Friday and Saturday we’re slammed busy.  It always seems to be they’re at a party or at a friends house.”

With school being out many kids have extra time on their hands.  Cpl. Mitcham says the curfew isn’t about giving citations but discouraging kids from choosing the wrong path.

“It’s only there to protect the kids. public safety is number one.  at night there’s a lot of opportunity for kids to go places they really have no business being at and it can can potentially lead to trouble.”

Multiple curfew violations can lead to fines or time in custody.
