The story of a Baton Rouge assistant principal accused of killing a pregnant teacher has now grabbed national attention.
“Nancy Grace” on CNN Headline News is looking into the murder of Lyntell Washington, 40, the Baton Rouge teacher who was seven months pregnant and found in a cane field in Iberville Parish. Robert Marks, 39, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree feticide.
WAFB’s Kiran Chawla appeared on the show Monday night to discuss the case.
For those who saw the segment, it was the first time Kala Marks, the suspect’s wife, has spoken publicly about the investigation. She stands by her husband, saying she does not believe he could do this.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Marks shot and killed Washington, who was pregnant with his child. He is accused of leaving her body in a ditch in Rosedale where a farmer spotted her six days after she was murdered. Washington’s body had to be identified using dental records.
Nancy Grace questioned Kala Marks specifically about her husband’s whereabouts the night Washington was killed.
“He’s a loving husband; a loving wife,” Kala Marks said. “I just don’t see how he could do it. I’m really just at a loss for words.”
“The night that Ms. Washington was murdered, where was your husband?” Nancy Grace asked.
“He left to go watch the basketball game with a friend,” Kala Marks answered.
“What friend was that? Do you know the friend?” Nancy Grace questioned.
“I did not,” Kala Marks replied.
“Did he give you a friend’s name?” Nancy Grace asked.
“She doesn’t know the friend, Nancy,” attorney Lionel Burns responded.
“Thank you, but I don’t believe you are her, so could you let her answer? If she doesn’t know the name …,” Nancy Grace started saying.
“She’s my client’s wife. I’ve gone through this story with her many, many times and she does not know the person,” Burns stated.
“Did he give her a name?” Nancy Grace questioned.
“Please ask her your next question,” Burns said.
“So, I guess that means you’re not going to let her answer, whether he gave her a name or not. That’s fine with me because she can be asked that on the stand,” Nancy Grace said.
“Did he come home that night, ma’am?” Nancy Grace asked.
“Yes, he did,” Kala Marks answered.
Burns will actually be on with Nancy Grace again Tuesday at 7 p.m. so you can watch that on CNN Headline News.
