LAFAYETTE, La. (The Daily Advertiser) – A local boy got a special surprise Wednesday morning for his birthday.
His heroes at waste disposal company Republic Services heard he was obsessed with the work they do, so they decided to stop by his Lafayette home.
Each morning that Republic’s garbage trucks come through Cohen Mahoney’s Lafayette neighborhood, the 7-year-old runs outside as the trucks take the garbage he’s collected over the week.
He knows all about them, often researching about the trucks and recycling on the internet.
“Anything he does, he’ll make it about recycling,” his mother, Candace Mahoney, said.
When Cohen’s seventh birthday rolled around June 12, his grandmother emailed Republic and asked for a shirt with their logo on it.
The company decided they could do the boy one better and brought a truck to his house for him to check out and climb inside. They also gave him shirts and a model of his favorite truck.
“It’s not often we get to come out and celebrate the community we serve,” Republic General Manager James Richard aid Wednesday. “So we’re excited to be able to do this.”
Cohen was surprised to see the truck on a Wednesday.
“At first, I thought we forgot to take out the garbage,” Cohen said. “This is so nice.”
His mother agreed.
“It’s so great that they would come out and do something like this for him,” she said.
Ever since he was a toddler, Cohen was obsessed with garbage trucks and recycling, his mother said.
It’s his responsibility at their house, and she said anytime he’s playing around the house, he’ll pretend to be a garbageman.
“Recycling saves our planet,” Cohen said.
