LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – What better way to celebrate Independence Day than lighting fireworks.
If you are planning on setting off your own this holiday, make sure you do it safely.
A few reminders before you stock up on bottle rockets, fireworks must be purchased from a licensed dealer.
It is also illegal to set off fireworks within Lafayette city limits.
“We want to make sure that everybody has a wonderful Fourth of July and make sure that they’re safe,” said Lafayette Fire Department Alton Trahan, “But make sure that you do it in the right way.”
Trahan also wants to remind parents to look at the labels before purchasing fireworks for their children.
“The kids should be supervised at all times. you want to make sure that an adult supervision is around any kids that are under age setting off fire works,” said Trahan, “Read the directions on the back side of each firework because everyone’s a little bit different and you make sure that the ones that you purchase is age appropriate.”
In order to sell fireworks in the state of Louisiana, you have to apply and receive a permit from the Louisiana Fire Marshall’s Office.
Owner of Extreme Fireworks, Rodd Richoux said he likes to give customers safety information before they buy their own fireworks.
“We give pointers,” said Richoux, “For instance, you should only light one firework at a time, before you shoot fireworks you should always look at your surroundings to make sure there’s no over head branches or power lines that could deflect or fire back down on you.”
If you do decide to light your own fireworks, always have a water hose and fire extinguisher near by.
