Family members say suspect in officer involved shooting suffered from mental disorder

IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) – Around 2 a.m. Sunday, an Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed a man who allegedly stabbed two people hours earlier at a nearby home.

“I stayed back and I just kind of walked a little bit as the cops had left walking this way then I saw him running and then I heard a gun shot,” said resident Harley Delahoussaye.

According to Master Trooper Brooks David, his office received a call that a man was holed up in a home on McDonald Street and Iberia Parish Sheriff Detectives were attempting to allow him to surrender peacefully.

News Ten went to the scene of the stabbing and spoke with resident Harley Delahoussaye who claims to be the cousin of the alleged suspect, Shannon Labit

“I asked the cop what happened,” said Delahoussaye, “He said ‘well we tazed him, we used a bean bag on him and we finally had to shoot him’ as far as what I was told and what I understood was that they had some problems with him and something happened earlier and that’s what it had to result to, them shooting him.”

Delahoussaye said that Labit did have a history of mental illness.

“He’s a paranoid schizophrenic,” said Delahoussaye, “But, he’s not who he was last night, that’s not him on a daily basis.”

Because this is an officer involved shooting, State Police have taken over the investigation.
